Zaman Legal was established in George Town with a particular focus on estate and inheritance law — an area that touches families at moments that are rarely straightforward. The founders recognised that while the legal process is the same for everyone, the experience of going through it varies enormously depending on how you are guided.
We set up the firm to be the kind of practice a family can call without feeling they need to prepare an explanation or justify why they do not already know the answers. Most people approaching inheritance and estate matters are doing so for the first time, often during a period of loss. That is not a weakness; it is simply the reality of human life.
Over the years, Zaman Legal has helped families in Penang and across Malaysia navigate wills, probate, letters of administration, and the particular requirements of faraid under Islamic inheritance law. We have remained a focused firm — not a general practice trying to cover everything — because focus in a field like this matters.
Our office in Jalan Macalister is where most of our consultations take place, though we understand that some families find it more practical to begin the conversation remotely. We accommodate both.

Estate and Inheritance Law in Malaysia
Estate and inheritance law in Malaysia sits at the intersection of civil law, Islamic law, and the administrative requirements of multiple government bodies — including the land registry, financial institutions, and the courts. For families without prior experience of the process, the number of moving parts can feel overwhelming at a time when their capacity for administrative effort is already reduced.
The process typically begins with understanding what assets form part of the estate and whether a valid will exists. Where a will is present, the executor named in it must obtain a grant of probate before they have the authority to administer the estate. Where there is no will, an application for letters of administration must be made by an eligible family member. Both routes involve the High Court and require careful preparation of supporting documents.
For Muslim Malaysians, faraid rules govern the distribution of the estate — specifying the shares that go to different classes of beneficiaries. Where the deceased left assets intended to go to individuals outside the faraid formula, different instruments such as hibah (gift) or wasiat (bequest, subject to the one-third limit) may be relevant. Understanding which assets are subject to which rules, and ensuring that administration follows the correct process for each, requires a practitioner familiar with both civil and Islamic frameworks.
